How to communicate using appropriate vocabulary

In the early years, much emphasis is placed on singing, rhythm, listening and performing. The children are made aware of different qualities of sound and are introduced to the Vocabulary and elements of pitch and melody.

KS1 music making develops the melody aspect further and tends to focus on particular topics. Composing and performing is also a major part of the music curriculum. The children begin to use the language pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

KS2 begin to understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions and start to use the language pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

About Corsham and the local area

Where possible, teachers embed the children’s learning through the different cross curricular topics. Links are made with reading and writing to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the topic.

Through experience inside and beyond the classroom

In Music, our aim is to provide a balance between creating and composing, performance, and exposure to different types of music, in order to foster a depth of appreciation for other cultures, genres, styles and times. Music is seen not only as an enjoyable end in itself, but also an enrichment of other curriculum areas, such as Dance and Physical Education, Science and English. We are also aware of the value of music as an aid to social integration and a way of promoting a calm atmosphere.

New knowledge and understanding appropriate to their age

The children are taught the National Curriculum for each year group with the Chris Quigley Milestones linking to their topic. This is split over a two year rolling program to ensure coverage and gives the children the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills.

How to keep themselves safe

When using the internet as a resource to communicate, research and present music content, children are encouraged to search safely and use child friendly sites such as Swiggle.

We are very lucky to have our very own, and well stocked, music resource centre – complete with keyboards, guitars and steel pan drums to name just a few of the instruments.

This year children in Year 3 learn the recorder, Year 4 the ukulele and the children in Year 5 are learning brass instruments with thanks to specialist teachers from The Corsham Wind band for their weekly whole class lessons. From this provision, We are proud to note that 8 children and rising have now joined the Corsham Wind Band and play in local concerts.

In KS2 children are offered the opportunity to begin learning a musical instrument. Lessons are taught in small groups and we currently offer piano lessons on a weekly basis and possibly brass instruments next academic year . Each year children through out the school participate in school products and performances.

For KS1 children the Christmas Nativity play is the main performance which includes plenty of singing, dancing, acting and most importantly -fun!

The children in KS2 participate in a full scale musical production. Rehearsals usually start in June with the final performances being held during the last weeks of the school year.
